This is a well known picture... can you name the operation, test and the type of device?

Grable, Nevada, 1953, about 15 kt explosion, you can guess it's it as it's one of the operation where the DOUBLE cap mushroom of the explosion could be see the clearer. Also, there is not a lot of place where they did test nuclear bombs aside of Nevada where you can see the mountains in background. This bomb made out of plutonium 239 extracted from uranium 235 normally done with "callutrons".
My second test could have been Joe one though but the pictures I've seen from the russian monster have nothing to do with that one.
Excellent... its is the grable shot of Operation Upshot-Knothole. But I doubt that it was pu239 since grable was a gun type device. Plutonium react too fast for that kind of assembly. A critical mass of uranium 235 or a mix of u235 and pu 239 is my guess.
As for the stuff used during Grable, I considered what you said and I think that you might be right as even during the operation on the Bikini in 57 they considered firing the device from a boat but finally decided not to do so for some stability reason, then I would say that probably that they used uranium 235 and perhaps even 238 as it was a kinda "small scale" explosion.

I didn't know the nuclearweapon's website, that's a pretty nice website, I found another one where there is some really good pictures as well:

I really think that you might appreciate that.
